Pear "Tikhiy Don" refers to the autumn varieties from the selection of the Rossoshanskaya zonal experimental station. Description of the variety and detailed characteristics are given by its author - A. M. Ulyanischeva.
The variety was obtained as a result of work on crossing varieties "Rossoshanskaya beautiful" and "Marble". "Quiet Don" has proven itself in cultivation in home gardening and zoned for cultivation in the Central Black Earth region of Russia.
Silent Don pear trees are relatively weak in growth. The height of an adult fruit tree at the age of ten does not exceed three meters. Covered with dense skin of greenish-yellow color with the presence of raspberry red blurred blush. The peduncle is medium, thickened. The flesh of a ripe pear is creamy white, characterized by tenderness and juiciness. The consistency is oily. The taste is sweet, with a slight acidity and astringency.
How to plant a pear with an eye
Pear "Silent Don", like other varieties, can be planted in spring or autumn. The soil for planting should be as loose as possible, which will allow for good air circulation and its access to the root system of the plant.
Soil preparation in the area intended for laying pear plantations, as well as the quality organization of the territory should be carried out by analogy with the laying of an apple orchard. Pear seedlings should be planted in pre-prepared planting pits, the diameter of which is 0.9-1 m at a depth of 0.6 m, qualitatively seasoned with nutrient soil.
Spring planting is recommended in late April or early May, before the plant wakes up. In the autumn, it is advisable to plant a pear in the first ten days of October.
In central Russia, an early spring landing is recommended. The optimal distance between seedlings of a pear or apple tree should always be about 5 m. The step-by-step instructions for planting pear seedlings are as follows:
- dig a planting pit with sheer walls corresponding to the size of the root system of seedlings prepared for planting;
- pour a mixture of humus, turf, top soil and complex fertilizers into the planting pit;
- make a mound of soil in the center of the landing pit and drive a reliable support peg into it;
- place the root system of the fruit seedling on the earthen mound and carefully spread all the roots in the form of a fan;
- fill the roots with fertile soil and lightly compact and compact the soil over the root system.
The root neck of the seedlings should rise about 3-4 cm above the ground. All planted plants should be fixed on the supporting pegs, and then abundantly water at the rate of a pair of buckets of water on one pear seedling.
A very positive effect on the growth and development of planted fruit plants is the mulching of the soil in tree trunks. It is recommended that in the first year after planting a pear, keep aisles under black steam. Around the trunk, it is advisable to make a small hole for watering the plants.
Harvest Dates and Rules
The harvesting time of the pear popular among gardeners of the Tikhiy Don variety depends, inter alia, on the cultivation zone and weather conditions throughout the growing season.
Pear "Quiet Flows the Don" refers to autumn varieties, removable maturity of which occurs around the beginning or middle of September. The period of so-called consumer maturity is observed from the last decade of September to November. At the picking stage, the skin of the fruit is characterized by a greenish-yellow stain. In the phase of full maturity, pears become yellowish with a blurred blush that has a beautiful orange tint.
Harvesting is recommended around mid-September, when the peel on the fruit is just starting to take on a yellow tint. In a cool basement, pears are able to maintain visual appeal and excellent taste for a month and a half.
The gardeners of our country appreciated the positive characteristics of the autumn pear of the Tikhiy Don variety, and the reviews about this variety are mostly positive. The plant compares favorably with high yield indicators, resistance to scab damage, beautiful and large fruits, which have a pleasant taste and are subject to sufficiently long storage.
It should be noted that this variety is characterized by insufficient frost resistance. It is for this reason that in conditions of snowy and frosty winters, fruit stands are often severely damaged.
How to water a pear
Implementation of measures aimed at increasing the immunity of plants, as well as providing shelter for pears in the winter, reduce the risk of damage to fruit plantings as a result of aggressive exposure to severe frosts.
