The Leningrad early ripening tomato was bred by domestic scientists for the North-West. The name of the variety is telling, it is clear that it is intended for summer residents of the Leningrad region. The hybrid needs to be grown in a greenhouse, it does not respond to a drop in temperature and high humidity.
The cultivation of the variety begins with sowing seeds for seedlings. Seeds are pickled in potassium permanganate, sown in shallow cassettes with a transparent lid. The term for planting in open ground under the covering material is the first decade of May, which means that seeds can be sown for seedlings in early April or in the last days of March.
In the phase of the second true leaf, tomatoes of this variety require picking. From a common container, seedlings are seated in separate glasses. When the seedlings reach the age of 55 days, it is time to transplant into the ground. They spend her in the evening. 6 bushes are planted per square meter. In the Leningrad Region, tomatoes are often grown in polycarbonate greenhouses. Seedlings are hardened for a week and planted in a greenhouse on June 1.
The garden bed is dug up a week before the tomato seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place. The depth of digging is 30–35 cm. Humus (bucket), superphosphate (2 tbsp. L.), Ammonium and potassium nitrate (a tablespoon) are added for digging. Seedlings in the summer are watered at least once a week. Between waterings, they loosen the ground, destroy weeds.
During the season, tomato bushes are fertilized 2-3 times. The first feeding is carried out with mullein infusion, all subsequent fertilizers. In August, the bushes are treated with boric acid solution. The variety has an average immunity to diseases, the introduction of fertilizers serves as their prevention.
The growing season can last up to 150 days, fruits ripen early (60–65 days). The yield characteristic is convincing, in spring greenhouses (unheated) they are removed from the bushes at 13.7 kg / sq. m. early ripe tomatoes.
- The fruits are not large.
- Medium in size.
- The mass of one is 50–80 g.
- The color of the pulp and skin is uniform, red-orange.
- The shape of the fruit is flat-round, with a slight ribbing.
- Up to 13 fruits are formed in one cluster.
- The purpose of the fruits is salad.
The taste rating of the ripe fruit is 3.8, reviews of the taste of the variety are different. The pulp is sour. Tomatoes are eaten fresh. The pulp contains 3.21% sugar, 7.1% dry matter. Bushes in the greenhouse grow up to 1.7 m.
The stems are covered with long (35 cm), corrugated, dark green leaves. Early Leningrad grows well in cool and humid climates. It is planted only because of early ripening and good adaptation to weather changes.
Reviews about the Leningrad early ripening tomato are positive. Easy care of bushes, good adaptation to heat, lower temperatures, high air humidity - qualities that are appreciated by summer residents who rarely visit the garden. The defining characteristic when choosing this hybrid is its early maturity.
Polina, Nizhny Novgorod Region: “The variety is ultra-early ripening, in our region the ripening of tomatoes begins in late July, fruiting ends at 20 August. Late blight on the bushes does not happen. Bushes are low, standard. I measured the highest bush - from the bottom to the top of the head 30 cm. I don’t remove my stepchildren, I plant 6 roots per 1 square meter. I tried to grow in a greenhouse, the bushes there are higher than in the open field and are very wide. The yield of the variety is excellent, it actively sets fruits even in the heat. The fruit tastes good, the skin is strong. "
