Strawberry "Shelf", or Fragaria Polka, belongs to the varieties of foreign selection of medium-term maturation. Variety of strawberry "Polka" was obtained as a result of breeding, when crossing the variety "Unduka" with the variety "Sivetta". The variety description characterizes Fragaria Polka as a very promising and medium productive worthy variety for cultivation in the conditions of home gardening.

Description and features of the variety

Strawberry bushes of the "Shelf" variety of medium height, compact type, with dense foliage and high mustache formation ability. Fragaria Polka berries are smooth, dark red in color, very tasty, with caramel-sweet and aromatic pulp. The surface of the berry is attractive, with a sheen. The average weight of the berry is at least 12−20 g. The variety belongs to the category of medium-yielding. Under conditions of proper care and compliance with the cultivation regimen, the average yield is approximately 1.10−1.35 kg per square meter of berry planting.

Garden strawberries of this variety grow quite well on any soil, but yield indicators are directly dependent on the level of soil fertility. The best result is observed when cultivating Fragaria Polka on light and medium-sized soils with an acidity of pH of 5.0-6.5.

In the process of preparing ridges for berry culture, 5.6 kg of organic matter and 40 g / m² of mineral fertilizers should be added. After deep digging and removal of weed vegetation in the area, the soil should settle well by the time of planting. Seedlings must be planted in well-prepared and nutrient-rich soil in spring. The most vulnerable is the root system of berry plantings Fragaria Polka. Therefore, at the stage of active vegetation, plants need regular watering and replenishment with mineral substances.

Features of top dressing and watering

Regular irrigation measures, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers and treatment against pests and diseases are necessary at the phase of growth and mass fruiting of strawberry cultivars of the Polka variety. When growing Fragaria Polka, special attention should be paid to watering and fertilizing:

  • a modern fruitful mid-season variety of Dutch selection in the spring period needs fractional introduction of nitrogen-containing fertilizers;
  • can be used for the first feeding complex mineral fertilizers in the form of nitroammophoska at the rate of 1 tbsp. l on a bucket of water or infusion of mullein diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10;
  • at the stage of budding and ripening of berries, strawberry bushes require an increased amount of potassium, therefore, for feeding, it is recommended to use potassium nitrate, wood ash or chicken infusion diluted 1:12 with water;

Strawberry "Shelf": grade description

  • in the autumn period, berry plantings must be fed with complex mineral fertilizers or organics in the form of a solution based on 2 tbsp. l nitroammophoski and 1 cup of wood ash added to a bucket of water;
  • any top dressing and fertilizing must be accompanied by abundant irrigation measures, which allows nutrients to be absorbed as quickly as possible and in full;
  • irrigation activities should begin in mid-spring, watering about three to four times a month, and in August and September, the number of irrigations is halved;
  • optimal is the use of drip irrigation, since such an irrigation system allows you to dose the water to the root system, avoiding overdrying or waterlogging of the soil;
  • watering is carried out with warm water in the evening, after sunset, or in the morning.

Irrigation is certainly combined with loosening of the soil, since oxygen must be supplied to the root system of the berry culture. High-quality and regular cultivation improves the nutrition of the roots and improves the productivity of Fragaria Polka.

Winter preparations

Strawberry "Shelf" by winter is able to build up a fairly healthy leaf apparatus, which will serve as a natural defense of the kidneys in severe frosts. Of course, the best protection of berry plantations from frost is the snow mass, which is an excellent heat insulator that protects the soil from strong and deep freezing. However, in conditions of a snowless or little snowy winter, it is advisable to use strawberry shelter in a personal plot.

Fragari a Polka, according to the originator, has sufficient frost resistance and does not need shelter and insulation for winter cultivation in central Russia; It is optimal to use fir spruce as a shelter. Experienced gardeners recommend laying cut raspberry branches under the spruce branches, which improve the breathability of the shelter.

A sufficiently good material for warming strawberry bushes Fragaria Polka is pine needles, which retains heat well, allows air to pass through and prevents the berries from boiling out.

Gardeners reviews and tips

Strawberry "Shelf" has a universal application and has proven itself both in fresh form and in homemade products. Garden strawberries of this variety are characterized by good resistance to powdery mildew, but, according to gardeners, Fragaria Polka is susceptible to rot damage.

How to plant strawberries

Heat arrives in the middle climatic zone of our country near the end of spring, and the optimum temperature regime for strawberry cultivation is observed only in the middle of summer, which determines the demand of gardeners and summer residents for seedlings of Fragaria Polka. It is this variety that belongs to mid-summer ripening and is perfect for growing in home gardening. However, with the snowless start of winter, Fragaria Polka bushes are best protected from frost with the help of quality shelters.
