Strawberry "Malvina", or "Malwina", is a fairly late variety cultivated by German breeders that is quite popular and demanded in home gardening. The description of the variety, or rather, a sufficiently new hybrid form, suggests the presence of qualitative characteristics obtained from the parent line in the form of Sophie strawberries and a clone of Schimmelpfeng and Weihenstefan varieties.
Description of Strawberry Variety
Crossbreeding work was carried out by experienced German breeder Peter Stoppel just over ten years ago. Currently, garden strawberries, or strawberries, under the unusual name "Malvina" is the only variety in the category of very late and self-pollinating.
Strawberry varieties "Malvina" is a very strong and powerful bushes. The leaves are dark green, medium in size, with a pronounced sheen, and the flowers are located under the foliage. The variety is classified as self-pollinating.
Berries are large in size and attractive in shape. They are characterized by sufficient density, which allows the transportation of the crop. The surface is shiny, bright scarlet. Taste at the stage of technical maturity is good. The taste at the stage of consumer maturity is excellent, distinctly dessert. The presence of a very bright strawberry aroma is characteristic.
Thus, The advantages of the variety include:
- late entry into bearing;
- high prospects for the continuation of the berry conveyor;
- a very high percentage of presentation of the berry;
- excellent dessert taste of the harvest;
- excellent long-distance transportability.
The disadvantages include insufficiently high productivity, as well as some features of the berries, laid genetically as a result of hybridization. In addition, the rather massive sizes of berry bushes suggest the implementation of a sparse planting, which is not very convenient in garden plots and garden plots limited in area.
Strawberry "Malvina": variety features
Types and treatment of wilting
This variety can be affected by thrips and weevil but has sufficient resistance to Verticillium. Nevertheless, should not neglect the main preventive measures to protect the berry plantings from damage by wilting:
- to protect strawberry plantings from Fusarium wilting, it is recommended to spray plants with the preparations "Fundazol" or "Benorat";
- prevention and treatment of verticillosis wilting, which affects garden strawberry bushes at any age, is carried out by applying soil irrigation under the root with 0.2% Fundazole solution or by fumigation of soil in a protected ground;
- it is very important to use exclusively healthy seedlings for planting and to carry out pre-planting dipping of the plant root system in a solution of the biological product "Agat-25 K" or "Humat-K".
Features of agricultural technology of strawberries
Due to the fact that the flowering period of garden strawberries "Malvina" is quite late, experts advise planting no earlier than mid-August. Planting of seedlings is recommended in May or the first decade of June.
The standard distance between the seedlings of this variety is at least 0.5-0.7 m. The inter-row space should not be less than 0.6-0.7 m. Such a mandatory space is due to the rather large size of the berry culture and the powerful growth of green mass.
Strawberry "Malvina" requires regular and plentiful watering. With a lack of irrigation measures, gardeners note the appearance of bitterness in a ripe berry. As a rule, berry plantings tolerate the winter period quite well. Nevertheless, in regions with severe frosts, it is recommended to insulate berry plants with chopped straw or spruce spruce branches.
Strawberry variety "Malvina" belongs to the category of market and receives positive feedbacks not only from gardeners growing this berry culture on personal plots and garden plots, but also from consumers. Experienced gardeners recommend that with great care apply to the use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers as top dressing, since the variety is characterized by an active build-up of green mass to the detriment of fruiting. Bushes are very powerful, reach a height of 0.5 m, multi-track. During the season, about eight horns are formed.
About 2-3% of the berries are characterized by such a feature as "flowering leaves." A fairly rare defect of a genetic nature is expressed in the formation of small leaves from ripening berries. According to gardeners, the advantages of the variety include excellent endurance and resistance to most diseases, including Verticillium and powdery mildew.
Strawberries: variety selection
In the conditions of home gardening, there is almost no damage to the berry plantations by fruit rot. The variety is able to easily withstand heavy rainfall and is not damaged in the form of sunburn. Sowing is quite sufficient, an adult plant produces a significant number of whiskers, so with a self-propagating variety the problem does not arise.
